Like previously posted articles on theCOR (Miss Representation and Killing Us Softly) this video speaks truth to the negative perception of women, their sexuality and their worth . The clip is a funny and refreshing video created by Film Maker Jesse Rosten.
Note: The commercial isn’t real, neither are society’s standards of beauty.
Today by act of Congress, is Human Trafficking Awareness Day in the U.S
While estimates of the numbers vary widely, the U. S. Government recently reported that 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders each year; 80 percent of them are female and almost half are minors.
These figures do not include the millions who are trafficked into labor and sexual slavery within national borders.
The International Labor Organization (ILO) – the United Nations agency charged with addressing labor standards, employment and social protection issues – estimates there are 12.3 million people in forced labor, bonded labor, forced child labor, and sexual servitude at any give time; other estimates range from 4 million to 27 million. Watch the documentary above which is narrated by actress and humanitarian Lucy Liu, “The Road to Traffik”. It reveals the shocking world of sex trafficking that Somaly Mam, a former Cambodia sex slave, is heroically waging a crusade to expose and end. The filmmakers accompany photographer Norman Jean Roy on his painful journey to document the brutal rape and suffering that thousands of children face daily in the brothels of Cambodia and Southeast Asia.
Grammy-nominated Morgan Page teamed up with Canada’s Tegan & Sara, for a new, original tune – “Body Work.” He’s remixed numerous cuts for the indie duo however the three wanted to write something together from scratch. The result is one of the most exciting tracks off the much-anticipated 2012 studio album. Above, watch the lyric video for the club mix on the track.

This one’s an older one but is quite refreshing to watch. New Boy is a story about a nine year old African boy, Joseph (Olutunji Ebun-Cole) who has fled a war-torn nation and is experiencing his first day of school in Ireland, and finds out quickly exactly what it means to be the new kid.
The short movie the winner of Best Narrative Short at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival and it was also nominated for an Oscar. Check out the full movie below, it runs at about 11 minutes.
Drake‘s new album “Take Care” leaked a week before schedule and I have to shout out the titled track Take Care which features Rihanna. The track is laced over the Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie XX single I’ll Take Care of You. Respect is due to Drake for taking an unexpected route on this one. It’s definitely got grit and will make a wicked single when it’s officially released. The track’s posted below for your listening pleasure!
The album also features guest appearances by Chantal Kreviazuk, The Weeknd, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Stevie Wonder, Lil Wayne and Andre 3000 and its set to be officially released on Nov. 15th.
Drake had this to say about the album being leaked:
“I am not sure if the album leaked,” Drake tweeted. “But if it did thank god it doesn’t happen a month early anymore. Listen, enjoy it, buy it if you like it…and take care until next time.”
Miss Representation is a look at how the media is used as a tool to dictate gender roles and its value. Similar to Jean Kilbourne’s Killing Us Softly this documentary addresses the misrepresentation of women within the media and demonstrates how women and girls are conditioned to believe that their value lies in their youth, beauty and sexuality. This sets into motion the subordination of women in our society and the diminished value they often encounter as individuals politically and socially. The documentary has interviews with noted politicians and media personalities alongside personal stories from teenage girls.
Check out the trailer below, and visit missrepresentation.org to take the pledge to spread the message of challenging the media’s restrictive portrayal of women and girls.
Check out VV Brown‘s music video for her latest single Children. The single addresses a fear for the future of directionless British Youth but remains optimistic throughout. The track’s from her upcoming album “Lollipops & Politics” to be released February 7, 2012. The album has more political undertones that her first album, which spoke more of love and heartbreak. I caught one of her acoustic sets on livestream where she featured songs from both albums and I must say, I can’t wait for her album to drop.
Lyrics Snippet:
Oh, if I had my way
I’d give everything I have
To make everything okay
Sing it with me
Darkness falls and kills the light
Don’t surrender, be alright
Fuse blow up like dynamite
And the children keep on singing, singing
Darkness falls and kills the light
Don’t surrender, be alright
Innocence like flying kites
And the children keep on singing, singing
Since our last article on Foster the People they group has continued to put out hit after hit. They are also selling out shows in all the major cities. They recently released a new video for their latest single Call It What You Want off their album Torches. The video’s a little creepy and probably should have been released before Halloween, but its not out of place with the single’s heavy drums and synths. Check it out below!
